Talkaoke was at The Trampery, in Old Street, for the Social Media Week event: Creative v Data: The Pressure of Algorithms on Video Creators and Social Influencers
Not all videos are created equal, but does this matter? On one hand, the algorithms of YouTube and other video platforms can make it possible for a teenager and their webcam to become as popular as a spinoff from a broadcast network, while viewers are fed new but similar content based on their viewing data. On the other hand, the pressure to feed the algorithms can arguably result in a disincentive to innovate creatively now that we know ‘what works’ – especially to brands and agencies who are reliant on metrics and analytics from video platforms to justify ROI. It also makes it more difficult for viewers to discover something truly new or different.
